This piece explains. If a nation supplies large amounts of fuel to another then it exerts a lot of power over it. As long as Germany is dependent on Russian gas it will be influenced by Russia. Obviously if it could get by on renewables it would not need Russian gas and the Nordstream pipeline, but it does and no doubt will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. So much for renewables. They can only be a minor part of the mix. The gas, coal and oil are still the main sources of reliable energy and everyone know it.
