Chicago bracing for “history-making” cold

Wednesday’s forecast high – high! – of minus 14F (-25.6C) would set a record for the coldest high temperature ever. The population of Chicago is about 2.7 million. Literally millions of people are at risk, in just one city.

Tonight’s overnight low could hit minus 20F (-28.9C), making it one of the 15 coldest days in Chicago history. Wednesday’s forecast high of minus 12 (-24.4C) would set a record for the coldest high temperature ever.

(Right now when I asked Google, it said it could drop even lower, to minus 21F in Chicago tonight.)

The high on Wednesday is expected to be about minus 12F, which would be Chicago’s coldest high on record for Jan. 30. Overnight lows on Wednesday will reach as low as 23F below zero. The coldest temperature ever recorded in Chicago, minus 27F , hit on Jan. 20, 1985.
