Most dangerous volcano on the planet, says scientist.
15 Oct 2020 – The largest lava lake in the world, at the mouth of the Nyiragongo volcano, is growing at an alarming rate, scientists warn. (Located in Democratic Republic of Congo.)
The lake is calculated to reach a critical point in the next four years, reports Express. However, this is an optimistic scenario. According to volcanologist Dario Tedesco, if an earthquake occurs (and that has happened before), lava flows can seep out of Nyiragongo much earlier. Tedesco is sure that all these characteristics make the African volcano the most dangerous on the planet.
Tedesco has watched Nyiragongo for almost 30 years. It is one of the most active volcanoes in Africa. Its opening is 2 km (1.2 miles) in diameter, with a depth of about 250 m (820 ft). Liquid lava is constantly boiling in the crater. In the event of an eruption, the molten rock can fall on the surrounding settlements at a speed of up to 100 km/h (60 mph).
The last time this happened, in 2002, some 250 people died and about 20 percent of the buildings in the neighboring city of Goma were destroyed.
