Looking at the occasional papers that referred to wind droughts in the press and social media before 2021 when major Dunkflautes started to wreak havoc in the British energy market.
Items in Britain, Germany and North America typically involved a journalistic report on the uncommonly low winds observed lately. The better reporters interviewed a meteorologist and someone in the wind industry. The meteorologist would explain that high pressure systems are typically associated with low wind speeds, without commenting on the implications of these high pressure systems for the wind power industry.
The person in the wind industry, typically a consultant or an official in the energy Department of government would say, in effect “Wot? Wind droughts? No worries, we got plans!”
There were great expectations for storage devices and “more integrated systems” and even demand management.
We now know that demand will be reduced in Britain and Germany by shedding power intensive industries, that is by deindustrialisation:)
