Why Are UK Electricity Prices So High?

From NOT A LOT OF PEOPLE KNOW THAT

By Paul Homewood

.

As we are well aware, the UK has some of the highest electricity prices in the world.

It is commonly claimed that the rapid price rise in recent years has been driven by the soaring price of natural gas. In fact, this is only a small part of the story.

I have analysed OFGEM’s energy price cap workings, comparing this quarter with Jan 2019, when the first cap was implemented.

£pa Jan 2019 Oct 2024 Increase
Electricity Price Cap 683 1118 435
Direct Fuel Costs 195 325 130
Other Costs 488 793 305

https://www.ofgem.gov.uk/energy-policy-and-regulation/policy-and-regulatory-programmes/energy-price-cap-default-tariff-policy/energy-price-cap-default-tariff-levels

Direct Fuel Costs reflect the full cost of generation (ie not just fuel). ROCs are not mentioned, but I believe these are also included. What are not included are all of the other green levies, such as Cfds and Capacity Market payments.

The increase in Direct Fuel Costs is 66%, not dissimilar to the increase in natural gas costs of 78% over the period.  But this is less than a third of the total cap increase. Most is the £305 rise in Other Costs.

So what has happened since 2019?

Here are a few things to consider:

  • CfDs
  • Capacity Market
  • System Balancing
  • Smart Meters
  • Constraint Payments
  • Grid Upgrades
  • Inefficient gas generation, due to intermittent working

You get the picture!

The only thing that has changed since 2019 is the rapid decarbonisation of the grid.

UK Funds UN Crackdown On Climate Dissent

By Paul Homewood

Britain is one of the main financial backers for this attempt to stifle debate about climate change:

The Global Initiative for Information Integrity on Climate Change is a joint partnership between the Brazilian Government, the UN Secretariat and UNESCO.

Bringing together countries, international organizations, and stakeholders worldwide, it aims to promote and defend information integrity on climate change, address disinformation, and enhance climate change awareness and action. It includes a global fund which will finance research into disinformation on climate change and initiatives to promote information integrity.

“Without access to reliable information about climate disruption we can never hope to overcome it. Through this initiative, we will support the journalists and researchers investigating climate issues, sometimes at great risk to themselves, and fight the climate-related disinformation running rampant on social media.”

Audrey AzoulayUNESCO’s Director-General

“We must fight the coordinated disinformation campaigns impeding global progress on climate change, ranging from outright denial to greenwashing to harassment of climate scientists. Through this Initiative, we will work with researchers and partners to strengthen action against climate disinformation.”

António GuterresUN Secretary-General

“Actions to combat climate change are also greatly affected by denialism and disinformation. Countries cannot tackle this problem individually. This initiative will bring together countries, international organizations, and networks of researchers to support joint efforts to combat disinformation and promote actions in preparation for COP30 in Brazil."

Luiz Inácio Lula da SilvaPresident of Brazil

It’s a bit rich, given the torrent of disinformation emanating from the UN!

What they want, of course, is to suppress any information that casts doubt on the official line about climate change.

It appears that the UK will bear a large share of the funding, as the only other contributors are Chile, Denmark, France, Morocco and Sweden.

It’s good to know our taxes are being so wisely spent!

Meanwhile the head of OFCOM, Melanie Dawes, is still a Member of the WEF’s Global Coalition for Digital Safety, tasked with suppressing “disinformation”:

BANKING CARTEL TRIES TO CONTROL THE USE OF FOSSIL FUELS IN THE USA

Using the excuse that they were trying to reduce fossil fuel use, three very big banks used their massive wealth to invest in coal and then increase electricity prices. It is an extraordinary story and shows the huge profits to be made while claiming to be saving the planet.
